Stellipass (3038m) von Mattmark aus

We took the first bus to Mattmark and could start our hike at 8:30 AM. First, we walked for 45 minutes in the direction of the Ofental. At some point we saw a large cairn and decided to go up. This bit was quite steep, there were a lot of shrubs, but we tried to go over the rocks as much as possible. After 20 minutes we crossed what seemed to be a path. We started following it, but soon we lost it. Therefore, we continued going up the steep slope. This part (T4) was over after another 30 minutes. The terrain got less challenging. We started seing some more cairns and finally we entered the Wystal.
The way up to the Stellipass was now more obvious. Two more hours of walking in this desolate valley, always with an impressive view at the Allalinhorn, Strahlhorn, Rimpfischhorn, Dom and Täschhorn, and we reached the Stellipass (3038m) at 12 o'clock. During the last 200 metres of the ascent, we saw a lot more cairns. At the pass you can see the Antrona valley and of course the Stellihorn with the associated glacier. We decided not to go to the Stelli, since we had no idea if the descent of the first part would go easily. It was really steep and so we were hoping for an alternative.
During the descent, fortunately, we saw plenty of cairns. If you pay attention you can really follow them all the way down to the path at the Mattmarksee. We also discovered that we weren't alone. Something had been watching us... Luckily for us it turned out te be an ibex, so no horror scenario this time. Approximately every 20 meters we saw a cairn, they were really helpful and started leading us down the steep slope. To our surprise, we recognized the path we had crossed earlier today. The small path was better visible in the descent then during the ascent. We tried to make some of the cairns a bit larger, in the interest of indicating the path more clearly for those who go up.
Two hours after leaving the pass, we reached the real path just above Mattmarksee. The beginning of the path into the Wystal was indicated by a very small cairn. If you can, try to go up here, it will be a lot easier than if you were to go up at the large cairn, like we did. It might still be difficult to find the path at times, even though we tried to make the cairns more prominent. Anyway, I do recommend this tour to experienced hikers. The scenery is incredible and although you're close to the Mattmarkstausee, it feels quite isolated. Maybe next time we'll try to do the Stelli. I hope that this report can be of help to other hikers. Be sure to check the pictures, since they among other things show the different cairns.
