El Pico - The Peak (360m)

Old Providence, oder auch Providencia, ist Teil des San Andres - Providencia Archipels und ca. 2 Flugstunden von Bogota. Nach unserem Trekking in der Sierra Nevada de Cocuy hatten wir hier eine Woche Tauchen geplant. Es gibt zwei Möglichkeiten, um nach Providencia zu gelangen: Flug nach San Andres und Weiterflug mit einer kleinen Turboprop nach Providencia - dieser Flug dauert ca 20 Minuten aber als wir recherchierten lag der Preis bei 230 CHF (www.satena.com).... daher haben wir uns für die zweite Alternative, den Katamaran von San Andres nach Providencia, entschieden (roundtrip 54 CHF, www.catamaranelsensation.com).. Die Überfahrt dauert je nach Seegang bis zu 5h und ist nichts für Menschen, die leicht seekrank werden....die Wellen haben über dem Kat zusammen geschlagen und einigen Mitreisenden ging es wohl wirklich nicht gut...

Wir waren in Freshwater Bay untergebracht, gleich neben der Tauschschule von Felipe's Diving. Das Hotel trägt den Namen eines englischen Freibeuters, Captain Morgan, der angeblich auf der Insel seinen Schatz versteckt hat... wir sind aber nicht darüber gestolpert.

Die Insel ist ziemlich klein, und wenn man (noch) kein Taucher ist, wohl nur etwas für einen kürzeren Aufenthalt. Für uns waren die 7 Tage jedoch ideal, da wir fast jeden Tag im - 28 Grad C warmen - Wasser waren und unter anderem Riffhaie und Adlerrochen bewundern durften. 

Aber auch die Lanschaft auf der Insel ist interessant. Die einzige Strasse führt an der Küste entlang, das Innere der Insel ist hügelig und der dicht Wald wichtiger Wasserproduzent der Insel. 

Die höchste Erhebung ist "El Pico", auch "The Peak" genannt, und ganze 360m hoch. Die meisten Guidebooks und auch locals raten dazu, einen lokalen Guide anzuheuern, da angeblich die Wegführung nicht ganz klar ist, wir wollten es allerdings doch so versuchen. 

Mit dem Roller gings bis nach Casabaja im Süden der Insel, wo der beliebteste Trail startet. Bereits auf der Hauptstrasse sieht man das Schild "The Peak 7km". Nach etwa 1km erreicht man das Ende der Strasse, der Pfad beginnt rechterhand des Hauses und ist nicht zu verfehlen. Entlang des Weges sind viele lehrreiche Tafeln mit Informationen über Flora und Fauna, und markieren den Weg nach oben. 

An einem einzigen Punkt war uns nicht ganz klar, wo es weiterging, da man erst Wegspuren nach links sieht und gerade aus auf den ersten Blick ein Fels und ein Stacheldrahtzaun im Weg sind. Bei genauerem Hinsehen hat der Zaun jedoch einen Durchlass und der Weg geht dahinter wieder recht eindeutig weiter - nun noch klarer mit dem Steinmännli, das Dominik noch gebaut hat...mal sehen, wie lang das stehen bleiben wird!

Wir waren nach ca 1h und 20 Minuten auf dem Gipfel, der schon recht gut besucht war, alle anderen Wanderer hatten wirklich lokale Führer dabei. 

Vom Gipfel durften wir nochmals einen wunderschönen 360 Grad Blick über die Insel und das Riff geniessen (übrigens mit 31km das 3. grösste weltweit), bevor wir uns wieder auf den Weg nach unten machten.... 

Die kurze Wanderung am letzten Tag auf der Insel war eine gute Gelegenheit nochmal Karibikfeeling mit heim zu nehmen und ist definitiv den Tropenschweiss wert!

The island of Providencia (Old Providence) is part of the San Andres - Providencia Archipelago about 2 hours flight time from Bogota. After our trekking trip to Boyacá we had planned for a week of diving here in the Caribbean Sea. To get to Providencia there is two ways: fly to San Andres and then take a small plane for a 20min flight to Providencia  (www.satena.com) ~ roundtrip was around 230 CHF for the short leg only, which is why we decided to take the 2nd option: the boat (roundtrip 54 CHF, www.catamaranelsensation.com). The boat ride is very rough, nothing for people who easily get sea sick....4-5 meter high waves during a 4 1/2 hour ride is rather for the brave. 

 We stayed at Freshwater Bay as the dive shop we had booked with was conveniently located next to the hotel, that bears the name of an ancient pirate, Captain Morgan (www.hotelpiratamorgan.org). 

The island itself is rather small, if you are not a diver you will probably not stay for a whole week there. Temperatures in January were nice and around 30C, with water temperatures equally high at 28C. Marine life includes reef shark and a variety of rays, well worth the rough boat ride. 

But also the landscape is fascinating.... the road runs around the island along the coastline, everything in between is jungle like green mountains, with "El Pico" being the highest with an elevation of 360m. 

Guidebooks and also the staff at our hotel recommended to hire a local guide, as the path wouldn't be easy to find. Nevertheless, we tried - successfully - on our own, and would have regretted to hire a guide as the path turned out to be obvious. 

We went by moto to Casabaja in the south, starting point of the most common of the paths. On the main road there is already a sign to the interior "The Peak 7km". 
After about 1km we parked the moto and followed the path to the right of the houses there. All along the trail there is signs with information about fauna and flora there, the path is clearly visible. 

The only point where one might make a wrong turn is about half way up, when there is a big rock and a fence. We first turned left here (wrong) but noticed after a couple of minutes as the path was leading into the nowhere. 
The correct trail is up that rock towards the fence, that at second sight has an entry. dominik also built a "Steinmännli" although who knows how long that will stand strong and mark the path. 

We reached the summit after about 1h 20m. With us there were about 20 other people up there, all of them with guides. 

From the summit we had a wonderful 360 degree view of the island, the turquoise colored water and the reef (by the way with 31km the 3rd largest worldwide). 

This short hike was a nice goodbye to the island on our last day and is definitely a recommendable activity on this little treasure island.
