Parpeinahorn (2602 m) - hike & snowshoe hike from Mathon
This was a mixed hike and snowshoe hike. Start in Mathon at 8:30 AM. Lots of spring flowers on the way up to Dros. But above elevation 2100 m it is all snow covered, so that is where I got to use the snowshoes. I generally followed the ski route up to Parpeinahorn, and I did not meet any other hikers above Dros. The weather was really nice, but it was a bit windy. Great views during the hike and from the summit of Parpeinahorn. Nearly one hour lunch break at the summit.
When I descended, the snow was very soft. I saw quite a number of marmots on the way. They must be having a hard time finding any food. I also spotted a ptarmigan couple. Back down below elevation 2100 m, there were again lots of spring flowers everywhere. And finally I saw a deer in the forest just above the village of Mathon.
Please see the attached GPS track for more details on the route.
